As I progress deeper into neuroscience and brain computer interfaces, I realize I need to get to know the brain better to better apply my understanding. EEGs specifically are the most accessible type of BCI to the average consumer.. I have a Muse 2 headset that I’ve been working with and linking the electrode placement to brain sections and functions was helpful.

Sections

There are 3 main parts of the brain, the cerebellum, cerebrum, and the brainstem.

The below is a graphic of the parts of the brain - mammalian part of the brain is also known as the limbic system of which a significant portion exists in the temporal lobe.

The cerebrum is the main part of the brain we can read using EEGs since it’s closest to the surface. EEG signals are relatively weak and have to ho through multiple layers of dura matter.

I’ll briefly list some facts for the other two parts of the brain.

• Brain stem
  • Bottom of he brain, the oldest part of the brain
  • Connects to the spinal cord
  • Breathing, heart rate, body temperature, wake and sleep cycles, digestion, blood pressure, processing of sensory information including pain
• Cerebellum
  • Behind the brainstem at the bottom of the brain. Much older than the cerebrum
  • Holds half of the brains neurons
  • Receives input from the sensory organs, including the eyes and ears, and uses this information to help coordinate movement and maintain balance
  • Involved in some aspects of learning and memory
  • Plays a role in the regulation of certain emotional and cognitive processes
